Following Metzinger’s first solo exhibition at L’Effort Moderne in January 1919, Paul Dermée published an article on Metzinger in the magazine SIC, March-April 1919, in which Dermée mentions some of the ideas expressed by Metzinger in a July 1916 letter to Gleizes. ‘Metzinger’, Dermée writes, ‘clearly exposes clear ideas. If he paints, it is to give concrete value to the emotions he receives from the visual world. The cause of these emotions lies in a balance [équilibre] of colored forms—exclusively. An equilibrium is only valid as a function of the environment [milieu]. Nature is an environment. A painting is another. These are two different spaces which have their own particular laws. What is in accord in the first becomes discord in the second.’ (Extract from the Metzinger monograph, Volume II, by A. Mittelmann)
