Notes: Christie’s 6 November 2014 catalogue states the provenance as Lucie Metzinger, Paris (by descent from the artist). Lucie was Metzinger’s first wife. She died at the end of September 1928. Though she very well could have owned this work, the passing down “by descent from the artist” makes no sense since the artist outlived Lucie. For this, it is assumed here that Suzanne Phocas, Metzinger’s second wife, was the person from whom the Rex Evans Gallery purchased the work. The Rex Evans Gallery archives would need to be consulted to be sure.
