Notes: Nudity in Metzinger’s art—a recurring theme throughout his career—had reflected social norms or standards of aesthetics, modesty and morality of their time in painting. His nudes of the 1930s, such as found in Yachting, conveyed both elegance and sophistication. Metzinger’s work of this period represented the ultimate transformation of matter into pure form; one that rather than provoking action encouraged contemplation, even admiration.
