About a Painting by Metzinger

In an auction on 7 May of this year at Hôtel Drouot, a small painting by Manet entitled Polichinelle sold for 420,000 francs to which must be added 19.50% of the auction fees, thus about 500,000 francs.

This painting had sold in 1878 at the Faure sale only 2,000 francs and 50,000 francs at the Claude Lafontaine sale in 1919: it is still the same painting, only the price has changed. What a lesson for those who wait for paintings to reach unaffordable prices to find them beautiful and worth buying.

At the same May 7 sale there was a 1912 Cubist painting by Jean Metzinger entitled Le Chapeau à la plume d’autruche. This painting which, in our humble opinion, was the most beautiful of the sale,—as at the sales of 1878 and 1919 mentioned above must have been that of Manet “le Polichinelle”—reached the price of 3,500 francs, at which it is necessary to also add 19.50% auction fee.

Congratulations to its buyer, Mr. Gaffé, for not having waited for it to be worth 420,000 francs to find it beautiful and add it to his collection.
